42nd Street

Set in 1933, the curtain rises on the audition for the female chorus for "Pretty Lady". The show's writers warn the dancers that at $4.40 a seat the audience will demand some spectacular dancing. Young Peggy Sawyer misses the audition but gets into the show anyway by impressing Producer Julian Marsh with her tap dancing skills.

Peggy is involved in a brush with Dorothy Brock, the show's 'over-the-hill' star, and is fired from the production. But when Dorothy eventually has to pull out of the show, Peggy is the only one with the potential to take her place. Julian Marsh begs her to rejoin the company in the lead role and utters the immortal line, "Peggy Sawyer, you're gonna go out there a youngster but you gotta come back a star." Which, as you'd expect, she duly does!
